Divisive Stumble Gives Cowboys and Eagles a Shot at Reclaiming NFC East Control

A rare historical slump in the NFC East has left both the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles with a clear path to challenge the New York Giants' lead as they meet this weekend.

The Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles arrive in Philadelphia on Monday night, both carrying identical 2-4 records into a matchup that could redefine the NFC East. With the division leader, the New York Giants, sitting at 3-2-1, both teams find themselves in a unique position where a single victory could dramatically alter their standings. The competition has been surprisingly soft, creating an opening for either squad to claw back into relevance.

A historic pattern of futility has defined this division's recent history. Over the past two weeks, every team in the NFC East played twice and failed to win a single game. This marks the first instance since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger that a division has experienced such a collective slump. For the Cowboys and Eagles, this fragility offers a rare chance to leapfrog the Giants and potentially take control of the race for a playoff spot.

Philadelphia's struggles are compounded by significant injuries and a deepening offensive crisis. The Eagles are on a four-game losing streak, their longest since 2020, and have managed only 58 points across those defeats. Quarterback Jalen Hurts is on injured reserve with blood clots and is expected to miss the remainder of the season. This places the burden on Tanner McKee, who has limited starting experience and is now tasked with leading a stalled attack.

The Eagles' offensive challenges extend beyond the quarterback position. Running back Saquon Barkley has missed time due to a hamstring injury, while backups Will Shipley and Tank Bigsby are also hurt. In last week's loss to Carolina, Dameon Pierce was the only healthy option at the position, rushing for 35 yards. McKee noted that he has a good preparation process and plans to coordinate more closely with first-year offensive coordinator Sean Mannion to find a rhythm.

The Cowboys face their own hurdles, particularly on defense. Ranked 30th in the league under first-year coordinator Christian Parker, Dallas has allowed opponents to gain an average of 4.7 yards per carry. Offensively, the team has scored only 29 points in its last two losses, including a 23-13 defeat to Green Bay. This marks the first time since 2019 that the Cowboys have scored fewer than 20 points in consecutive starts by quarterback Dak Prescott.

Despite the on-field difficulties, owner Jerry Jones has signaled stability in the front office. Speaking at the NFL's annual fall meeting on Wednesday, Jones stated that he does not expect further coaching changes this season. He described the recent hiring of Mike Pettine as a strategic and unique move, suggesting that the current staff will be given the opportunity to execute their vision before any major personnel shifts are considered.

Individual milestones add an extra layer of significance to this contest. Javonte Williams is close to becoming the second Cowboys player with seven rushing touchdowns through the first six games of a season, a feat previously achieved only by Emmitt Smith in the mid-1990s. CeeDee Lamb has 48 receptions, third in the NFL and a franchise record for this point in a season, while also approaching 8,000 career receiving yards.

For the Eagles, tight end Dallas Goedert needs one catch to move into third place on the team's career receptions list. These personal achievements stand in contrast to the teams' broader struggles, highlighting the gap between individual talent and collective success in a division that has suddenly become unpredictable.

Dallas enters as a four-point favorite, a line that reflects the Eagles' poor performance against the spread. The Cowboys are 3-3 against the spread, while Philadelphia sits at 1-5. Dallas leads the all-time series 72-58 and won the last meeting 24-21 in November 2025. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m. CST on ESPN.

The outcome of this game will set the stage for a critical stretch of the season. The Eagles travel to Washington on November 1 before hosting the Giants to conclude their divisional schedule. This sequence of games will likely determine whether Philadelphia can still mount a successful comeback or if the divisional title is effectively out of reach.
