The tension in southern Jordan spiked on Friday when armed men struck a place of worship during a funeral service. The attack occurred in the village of Hammoud within Karak governorate, a region known for its significant Christian population. Authorities confirmed that at least seven people were killed in the shooting. This incident marks a rare and violent disruption for the majority Sunni Muslim kingdom, where such assaults on Christian communities are uncommon.
The sequence of events unfolded quickly and with lethal precision. The assailants arrived in a single vehicle and exited during the funeral procession. They stormed the compound of the local Greek Orthodox church before opening fire. The public security directorate stated that a manhunt for the perpetrators is currently underway. The area, located approximately 110 miles south of the capital Amman, remains a focal point for security operations in the wake of the violence.
State broadcaster Al-Mamlaka aired footage capturing the moment of the attack. The video shows two gunmen dressed in casual clothing holding pistols. A third individual is seen carrying a long gun. The attackers fired from a street entrance before advancing toward the church. The visual evidence supports the official account that the group moved with purpose and coordination during the service.
An eyewitness provided details on the duration and scope of the shooting. The witness stated that the vehicle carrying the attackers pulled up and the gunmen fired without pause for five minutes. Afterward, the group escaped. The witness estimated that between 150 and 200 people were inside and around the church at the time. Most of the victims were reported to be between the ages of 50 and 70.
Government officials provided an update on the casualties and the likely motive. Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya addressed the public at a press conference, stating that 34 other people were wounded in the attack. He identified a group of extremists as the party responsible for the shooting. Minister of Government Communications Mohammed Al-Momani added that security forces are actively investigating the incident to determine all facts.
Leadership in Jordan has responded with strong language regarding the next steps. King Abdullah II promised the harshest retaliation against those responsible for the violence. He emphasized the value of every Jordanian life and stated the nation would strike with an iron fist against those who threaten it. The monarch made these comments on social media, signaling a firm stance on security.
The attack has also drawn attention from regional figures. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, the only Christian head of state in the Arab world, condemned the shooting. He described it as a heinous terrorist attack. In a statement from the presidency, Aoun noted that the incident reaffirms that terrorism has no specific religion or homeland. He added that the aim of such acts is to strike at coexistence and spread strife.
This is not the first time violence has plagued the Karak region. In 2016, gunmen ambushed police in a series of attacks in the area. One of the sites was a Crusader castle that is popular with tourists. Ten people were killed in those incidents, including seven officers, and dozens were wounded. Security forces killed the attackers after a lengthy standoff, establishing a precedent for handling violent threats in the governorate.
The community now awaits further details as the investigation continues. The focus remains on identifying the specific extremist group involved and securing the area. With a manhunt underway, residents in Hammoud are on high alert. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges in maintaining security in diverse areas of the country.
